| March 9, 2010 I have been on the Chetco for the last several days. The fishing has been decent. Not many boats around which is really helping the fishing and getting them to bite. The water is starting to get pretty low and clear. It looks as though we are going to get some rain later this week. That should spark things up a bit. There have been some nice fresh fish entrering both the Smith and Chetco which is very nice to see this late in the season. Hatchery fish have been in the mix too. The last of the Derby's will be held this coming weekend and that will mark the end of my steelhead season. I will be heading to the softball field for another exciting season with the Lady Crusaders. I will have one final report after the derby and then I will be on a break for awhile. I will run a few trips through the end of the month and in the coming months but on a smaller scale because I will be coaching softball. After that, the fall season will be my next big stretch. FISH ON, Alan March 3, 2010 Over the last week or so we have had some of the heavyest rain to date. Last weekend we were literally blown off the river by both wind and heavy rain. Both the Smith and Chetco went out for a couple of days. Now that the rivers have receded a bit and are fishing once again, the Chetco has been fishing much better than the Smith. Lots of downers are starting to show along with a few nice chromers. The rivers look great and I think they will both continue to produce until the end of March. Don't forget the new rules on the Smith as of March first. No barbs and no take on wild steelhead. Good luck and have fun. FISH ON, Alan February 24, 2010 Fishing has remained good over the last week or so. I have been back and forth between the Smith and Chetco and the southern rivers. All of them have been giving up some really nice fish. Now that we have gotton another decent storm track running through the North Coast, I have been forced to head North once again. I fished the Chetco yesterday and the Smith today. The results were good on both systems. I will be fishing in the first of the derbies this Friday and Saturday. The rivers look to take on a Big rise come Friday. We will have to see how things pan out for the derby. FISH ON, Alan February 18, 2010 Over the last four days I have been North on the Smith and Chetco and South on the Eel. The Northern rivers have been getting more rain than the Southern so it has enabled me to fish both. The Smith was a bit high and very clear for it's heighth. This made it difficult to fish without spooking them. Fish counts were between 1-4 hook-ups. Over on the Chetco, I had about the same. High condidtions but better color condidtions. Fish wise, it was a bit slow until yesterday when I got reports that the bite had improved. I was on the Eel yesterday and the bite was good. Lots of downers but it was a lot of fun. The river was in perfect shape. It looks as though I will be able to fish at home through tomorrow but after that it looks like I will be forced to head North again. FISH ON, Alan February 14, 2010 It has been raining for the last couple of days like cats and dogs. The Smith has been the only river fishable. There has been fish around but just not in big numbers. I have been averaging between 1-3 fish per day. The size of the fish has been around 8-15 pounds. Hopefully things mellow out a bit and the rivers to our south drop enough to fish in the next few days. We'll just have to keep our fingers crossed. FISH ON, Alan February 8, 2010 I have been back and forth between the Smith and Chetco Rivers over the last several days. The fishing has been holding steady for me. We have been hooking between 2-8 fish per day. There have been some really nice fish entering the 2 systems and the river condidtions have been great. Day before yesterday, Kevin Patton landed the largest steelhead in my boat this season. It weighed in at16 pounds. I have been sidedrifting roe and a Fill Pill for all of the fish. There is rain in the forecast for the next few days. I am hopeing it's enough to put a little color and rise back in the rivers. We will see. Fish On, Alan February 4, 2010 For the last several days I have been fishing on the Chetco and doing well. The condidtions were great and the fish were there. But now with a bit of rain I have had to move to the Smith. Yesterday we had a rising river and we chose to end the day on the first drift only having one bite. Today was a whole different story. The river fished great and they were biting well for us. We hooked 6 and landed 4. Now it's raining again and will change it up for tomorrow but I do not believe it will blow it out. Hopefully the winds calm down a bit and we get the day in. FISH ON, Alan |
